Why create a decluttering habit? Creating a decluttering habit for the space you live in can be very helpful long term.
Having lots of physical possessions can bombard you on daily basis. We can spend hours searching for misplaced items and, as time is the most precious commodity we have, spending time looking for misplaced items only because our home is full of clutter, is definitely a waste of our time.
But despite Marie Kondo’s signature decluttering method which teaches us that we should only keep items that ‘spark joy’, many of us are still reluctant to have a clear out in case we later regret it.
Now, here is a more reasonable approach to decluttering: declutter means that you are organising your belongs in such a way that optimises your everyday space, without the need of getting rid of your possessions, unless you choose to do so.
Declutter your storage space first
Weather you are deluttering by getting rid of things, or simply by organising it better, start by organising your attic, shed or garage space. The idea is that you make room for storage first, before you start organising the rooms in the house. Once you have some free storage space, then you are ready to start the decluttering process around the house.
Start with items that are not in boxes first. Then move onto boxed goods and reassess the need to keep them or not. You will be surprised by the amount of things we can gather and forget about them, simply by the fact that they have been boxed away somewhere for too long.
Benefits of decluttering
Decluttering creates a sense of confidence and self-efficacy, where you see yourself as competent – It utilises our decision-making and problem-solving skills, making us feel better about ourselves. By doing so, we’re likely to find that we feel energised enough to start ticking other things off our to-do list.
Cleaning and organising spaces reduces our anxiety – When things feel out of order, it can make us feel scattered and anxious. Creating order relieves that anxiety.
Decluttering can reduce relationship and family tension – Clutter can create family stress. You might argue about mess with your spouse, or find yourself snapping at your children if you’ve spent 10 minutes looking for something. Decluttering can reduce this stress.
Find lost treasures while decluttering – When you declutter, you often find items you’d forgotten you had, bringing us great surprises sometimes.
