This months elephant of the month, Black Diamond weighing nine tons believed to be the largest Indian Elephant in captivity.
Elephant Storage’s Elephant of the month – Black Diamond
In the circus, they said he was a good worker. They chained him to two females elephants. On October 12, 1929, in Corsicana, Texas Black Diamond went on a rampage, injuring his long-time former trainer.
Deemed too dangerous to continue with the circus a decision was made to put him down. Black Diamond was so large it too 100 shots to put him down.
His mounted head and put on display in a museum in Houston, Texas for many years. A local Corsicana businessman, Carmack Watkins bought Black Diamond head. Watkins who was just 5 years old amongst the crowd the day Black Diamond went on the rampage.
In 2006, singer and songwriter Al Evans wrote “Black Diamond’s Song,” in memory of Black Diamond.
