Elephant Self Storage, Elephant of the Month, Kandula

This months elephant of the month, Kandula is a famous war elephant mentioned in the Sinhala chronicle Mahavamsa.

Elephant Storage’s Elephant of the month – Black Diamond

According to the chronicle, early in the second century BC when King Dutugamunu of Sri Lanka was born.

Many items of value were said to have appeared spontaneously, as gifts for the new king.  Among them was an elephant who was found by a fisherman named Kandula.

As the king and Kandula grew older the king used to mount Kandula during duels.

An Asian Elephant was later born in 2001 at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and was named after Kandula.
