There are plenty of reasons people choose to declutter their home for Christmas with Elephant Storage this time of year.
One of the biggest is to prepare for hosting friends and family. A clutter-free home feels warm and inviting, giving you and your guests the space needed to fully enjoy the holiday celebrations.
Renovating or Moving over Christmas?
The holidays often bring extra items such as gifts, decorations and trees that must be stored somewhere in your home. If you’re short on space, then it can feel cluttered with all your usual belongings. By renting a self-storage unit, you can store excess items, or even better yet – use it as a secret place to store gifts where your family won’t find them.
With having a couple of annual leave days Many also use this season to tackle home renovations, whether it’s a fresh coat of paint in one room or a larger project throughout the house. Decluttering during this process helps ensure that when the renovations are done, your refreshed space will be filled only with things that add value and purpose to your life.
If you’re preparing to move house around the Christmas period or new year, then decluttering can be stressful in and amongst the festivities. If you’re selling your current property at the same time, then having a storage unit helps you to move some of your belongings to a safe space so that your house looks more inviting to potential buyers. Plus, having a storage unit makes the moving process smoother.
Top Tips for Decluttering
It can be tricky to whittle down what items to keep, or what items to get rid of. Most of us have sentimental attachments to a lot of the things in our homes, so it’s understandable to put off decluttering. These tips will be sure to make the process a lot easier:
- Be Brutal.
We know you’ve heard this one before, but it really can be life-changing when choosing what must go, and what gets to stay. If you’re not regularly using an item, and it adds no real value to your home or lifestyle, it might be something to get rid of.
- Minimise Waste.
Just because you’re getting rid of things, that doesn’t mean they all have to go to landfill. If it’s clothes, consider selling your items on reselling platforms, so you can earn some money at the same time! Otherwise, investigate donating to charity shops, recycling or repurposing your items
- Break it down into manageable tasks.
If you’re moving house, or are even just renovating one room, it can be daunting to go through everything you own. An excellent way to deal with this is to break down decluttering into small tasks. For example, dedicate one day to just going through kitchenware, and perhaps another for clothing. If you’re moving house, then going through one room at a time can also make this process more manageable.
- Have a rule and stick to it.
This point goes back to our one about being brutal. Introduce a rule or set of rules to follow when decluttering. For instance, when going through your belongings, if the item hasn’t been used in the past year (unless it’s a piece of decoration) then it needs to be donated. If it hasn’t been used in the past year, it’s probably not going to be used in the next year either! Come up with a rule that works for you and stick to it.
