What Are Storage Centres?

Being one of the longest-serving storage centres in Dublin, operating for over 15 years now, a question we always get is what are storage centres?

So, with that in mind, and as we are getting closer to wrapping up another year, we thought we would take to our blog and give you a little history and background to storage centres.

The term itself, storage centres is a usual term in Ireland for businesses that offer self-storage. These businesses operate where storage space, such as rooms, lockers, containers, and/or outdoor space, also known as “storage units” are rented to tenants on a short-term or long-term basis (often month-to-month). Self-storage tenants include businesses and individuals alike, for a range of items from business files, through spare room storage when moving home.

Modern self-storage facilities (in which the tenant has exclusive access to the storage space) did not begin to appear until the late 1960s. The first-ever self-storage facility chains opened in Texas, USA in the 1960’s. This was often helped by the fact that most homes in Texas do not have basements, which often is used for storage. The first self-storage facility in Europe was started in the United Kingdom by Doug Hampson and opened in central London in 1979. It was Doug Hampson who gave Britain the modern self-storage industry, with its bright, clean corridors and endless rows of brightly-coloured doors. Modern storage facilities grew slowly through the 90s, at which time demand outpaced supply and caused a rush of new self-storage developments across the world.
